Meet Me in My Imagination

See the picture at the top of this blog? I liked the image because of the woman reading to her little girl and I figured it was close enough to be a representation - as headers go - because she has brown hair.

But that isn’t me. That woman is probably 5′11″, and weighs approximately 27 pounds. I, on the other hand, am 5′2″ in shoes, and though I doubt anybody would consider me overweight, I could use some exercise for those post-baby problem areas.

My hair isn’t that dark, my neck isn’t that long, and my nose is not that neatly shaped (darn Polish heritage). And I would guess this cartoon woman is a few years older than me as well.

But that’s the beauty of headers, and of blogs in general. Bloggers everywhere put cartoon images on the top of their sites because they have the freedom to portray themselves to the world any way they wish.

It goes along with the freedom to write whatever we wish as well. I’m sure there are some who have even created entire characters via blogging, and have sucked readers in to an imaginary person with imaginary experiences. The weirder the situation, the more readership you are likely to get. I can think of a few who I’m pretty sure have…used their poetic license, so to speak.

There’s a trend going on now, called blogger meet ups … basically exactly what it sounds like. You spend a day or a few hours with another person whose blog you are familiar with. Then the next day you write a flattering post about what a wonderful time you had and how witty and fun the other blogger is and how you’re sure they thought you were a total dork, but then they write the same thing about you. Apparently it’s all the rage.

I’ve never participated in a blogger meet up. And probably won’t in the near future. I’m an introvert by nature and shy about meeting new people one-on-one because I suck at small talk and generally communicate much better in writing.

But I’m still curious about them. I wonder how many people come away thinking, “s/he was NOT what I expected,” or “his/her header image is TOTALLY a misrepresentation.”

I wonder if you would be surprised if you met me…or maybe I would be surprised that I’m exactly what you expect.
