Mandatory Health Insurance for MA

I hope this idea doesn’t catch on. I mean, if you want to provide state-subsidized health insurance for the poor, or reduce rates for everyone else, then great.

But to force people who the STATE decides can afford it to shell out the money for health insurance seems like it would be unconstitutional. Why should the state be allowed to penalize people who choose not to get health insurance, increasing the penalty until they have no choice but to get insurance?

I am not insured. My husband and I discussed it and decided that it would be a waste of money for me to carry insurance, and we save a lot of money by putting that several hundred dollars per month into a savings account instead, and just paying the full bill for my doctor appointments. So far, it has worked quite well.

The fact that the government would have the authority to tell me I had to throw that money away every month infuriates me. It’s my decision because it’s my income and my body. Aside from required taxes, the government shouldn’t have the right to tell me how to spend my money.

And if insurance is required, who’s going to regulate what the insurance companies charge for this mandatory service? What’s to stop them from price gouging just because they can.

I do not like this law. And I don’t plan to move to Massachusetts.
