NAFTA Super Highway

Those of you who read regularly may have noticed that this blog refrains from the primary hobby of would-be writers across the world: “Bush Bashing.” This is not a political blog, so politics in general are rarely mentioned.
While I have occasionally expressed my concerns about the decisions made by our current Commander in Chief and his Administration, I have not partaken in the wildfire of exclamations, accusations and scathing, boisterous commentary that is spread across the blogosphere every time he picks his nose.
HOWEVER…
This really makes me nervous. Upon first glance, I DON’T. LIKE IT. AT. ALL.Â
And what makes me even more nervous is the fact that plans have begun and construction is set to begin next year…and we as the American Public are just now hearing about it.
This Article was published May 19, but the entire issue has been relatively well kept under hat until recently…and it’s still not widely known.
As a summary:
NASCO, under the Bush Administration, has plans in the works to build an enormous (4 football fields in width) international highway extending from Mexico to Canada to increase dissemination of foreign goods throughout the US and to Canada in a less expensive manner, by bypassing the checkpoints and tariffs ordinarily incurred by importing directly to the United States.
My question is…why is there this assumption that legitimate goods and products is the only thing that will be transported?
Where is the Administration that vowed to protect our country by keeping our borders safe and beefing up Homeland Security?  I personally cannot think of a better way to invite terrorists onto our soil, other than perhaps sending out a personal invitation and hiring a private jet to fly them here.
First, the Ports Thing. And now this. And nobody even gets the chance to overrule this decision, because it’s not being passed through Congress.
I don’t want what looks like the precursor to the creation of the North American Union. I don’t think it’s in my (or my country’s) best interest to become closer and closer to a single entity with Mexico and Canada. Their economies can only drag us down.
Free Trade benefits? Getting cheap labor and cheap stuff cheaper? That doesn’t interest me. Frankly, I don’t even shop at WalMart - I want quality. I also want my local vendors and suppliers to survive.
And cheap labor is fine, to an extent…but we already have that, even with the current immigration measures. Opening the borders like that would mean an onslaught of immigrants to this country from the south - it could totally revamp our societal and economic structure. Minimum wage could drop, or stagnate for years just because there are people willing to accept lower wages for the same work. Our poverty rate would increase severalfold.
Mr. President, please open your tight lips about this subject and give us some explanation. I’m listening. Tell me why there has been no communication to the public of this MAJOR PROJECT that WE’RE PAYING FOR. Tell me how this benefits our country?Â
And tell me what you are doing to preserve the integrity of border control and security of this nation. I hope that your head hasn’t gotten so stuck in Iraq that you have lost total concept of what’s best for your own shores.
I hope. But my faith is waning.
