You're not self-absorbed. We have the same dynamics in my family. My brother and I joke that our medical histories are great and no one ever gets sick or dies in our family. They just move to the farm like the family dog. I think there is as much that I don't know about my folks as I hope they don't know about me (ya know, the rebellious years).

You are not at fault! It is a parents job to protect their children and there is a lot of information you are maybe not meant to be told. Do YOU tell your children everything about your upbringing? Will you when they're older? It's doubtful. Children need to be protected. You were the child in the situation. They protected you.

You are not being self-absorbed at all! I think it all depends on what kind of relationship with our parents we have. I'm like you, I would never question some of my moms past doings, because quite frankly, I don't want to know, lol. It is not self-absorbtion, its just not feeling comfortable knowing them as anyone other than mom or dad.

It's always hard for me to picture my parents at an age or stage in their lives other than the here and now.

What an incredible story about your dad and his mother. It's no wonder that the experience had a powerful effect on his life. I once heard someone say "Every person you meet has a story that will break your heart." Guess that means our parents and grandparents too.
